How much will a DUI cost?

Driving under the influence can cost you plenty, even if you only get caught once. When it is a repeated offense, the penalties only get harsher.

Here is what you can expect to pay as a result of getting caught driving under the influence.

Fines

A DUI can come with hefty fines. Depending on your blood alcohol concentration (BAC), you may have to pay up to $5,000 just for the first offense. If you have prior DUI offenses on your record, fines can go up to $10,000.

Ignition interlock device

Ignition interlock devices, or IIDs, are court-ordered devices that you must install in your car as a condition of your license reinstatement. IIDs can detect the amount of alcohol in your system and prevent you from even starting the car if you have had too much to drink. A year-long IID is often a requirement if you get more than one DUI. In Pennsylvania, an IID can cost you about $1,000 to install.

Costs after an accident

In the event of an accident, a DUI charge can cost you big time. From car repairs to medical bills, there is a lot that you may have to deal with if something goes wrong. On top of this, your insurance company could raise your rates or even drop your policy altogether.

Driving under the influence is never worth the risk. DUIs can affect more than just your driving privileges: Your finances, job security and emotional well-being may be at stake. This is why you should think twice before driving while impaired.
